Our new house and the area where we live

We have built our new house on 1.2 rai (2,000 qm) of land right in the geographic centre of the island. While there are many foreign residents along the Southern beaches and in the South of Phuket, we are in a totally Thai neighbourhood. Our property borders on rice fields, and from my front porch I have a view on both of the mountain ranges that traverse the island.

The Eastern part of our empty building site. This used to be part of an old rubber plantation.

The Western portion. In the back just in front and to the right of the bamboo is now our 15x15 m pond.

Less than one month into construction

Our pond, still a bit dirty and looking empty of life at this time.

Our house is finished, construction time 36 days !  As I sit on my verandah I overlook the rice fields and two mountain ranges. The view on the right is as you approach from the road. The outside cooking area is to the right.

Lots of landscaping needed, but the water level of the pond is up already to the grassy line now that the rainy season has started. On the right the kitchen area (the cooking is done outside).

My favourite corner (left). The eating area on the right (unless we eat out on the porch)

We have now added a roof to the outside cooking area as well as over the area where the car is parked

Chim and Chuang are frolicking in our pond. The water is beautifully clear now, plants are starting to grow, and there are some fish in it.

The pond is the best thing about our place. Almost daily I have a swim in it and float on the air mattress reading a book. A great way to stay cool ! Now that vegetation has covered the banks the water stays clear, even after a heavy rainstorm.

Now during the rainy season (July to November) the rice fields are a vivid green.

Less than four kilometres from our house is Kao Phra Thaeo National Park with Tone Sai Waterfall. It is nice to go over there, sit in the shade of ancient jungle trees, or have a dip in the cool water, and listen to the sounds of nature.

Less than ten kilometres to the West of our house is beautiful Bangtao Beach
